Blackjack Game Variants

Each different variant of blackjack has distinct rules that affect the house edge and what strategy should be used. Single deck games have favorable odds thanks to reduced card counts.

European rules, on the other hand, delay the dealer’s second card until after player actions, while American formats give the dealer a hole card, checking for blackjack ahead of player decisions.

Standard Formats

Classic Blackjack has six decks with standard rules and 3:2 payouts on natural blackjack. You can double down on any two cards and split pairs just once, while the dealer stands on all 17s.

Single Deck variants reduce the card count for a lower house edge but often modify payout structures to 6:5 on blackjack. Card counters prefer single deck, but the 6:5 payout changes the math.

But in European rules, the dealer’s second card matters. European Blackjack deals the dealer only one card face-up initially. If you double down or split and the dealer reveals blackjack afterwards, you lose all additional wagers.

American Blackjack, however, lets the dealer check for blackjack before player actions, protecting additional bets.

Regional and Specialty Variants

Atlantic City Blackjack uses eight decks with the dealer standing on any soft 17. Late surrender is allowed after the dealer checks for blackjack. You can split up to three times for four hands total and double after splits too.

Vegas Strip Blackjack has four decks, allows re-splitting aces once, and permits doubling after splits.

Double Exposure Blackjack reveals both dealer cards face-up at the start – sounds great until you see the adjusted payouts. To compensate, blackjacks pay 1:1 instead of 3:2, the dealer wins all ties except tied blackjacks, and doubling is restricted to hard 9-11.

Then there’s Double Deck, which features the dealer standing on soft 17 with standard splitting and doubling rules.
